To increase the use of the 1991 Canadian Census Cohort: mortality & cancer follow-up, Health Analysis Division will be providing access to this database through the Statistics Canada's Research Data Centres. To achieve this goal, a pilot project will be implemented in order to: i) develop and evaluate confidentiality vetting rules that will ensure data confidentiality, ii) improve documentation, iii) and assess data quality.
The 1991 Canadian Census Cohort: mortality & cancer follow-up is a probabilistic linked database. Approximately 2.7 million individuals aged 25 or older, who were enumerated by the 1991 long-form census, were followed for mortality (1991 to 2006), cancer (1969 to 2003) and annual place of residence (1990 to 2007). Approval has been granted to extend the follow-up period to 2011 when data become available. Complete details of the construction and content of the database are available in the attached reports (Wilkins et al., 2008, Peters & Tjepkema, 2011).

As the primary objective of this pilot project is to develop and evaluate confidentiality vetting rules for these data, to adequately test these rules, preference will be given to proposals that focus on at least one of the following criteria:
Proposals should be submitted by August 31, 2012. In addition to the above criteria, proposals will also be assessed on the scientific merit and viability of the proposed research. It is expected that up to 4 proposals will be accepted. In accordance with the Access to Information Act and Privacy Act, approved researchers will need to submit a project description that will be posted on the Statistics Canada website.
Proposals should be submitted to:
